Off-Grid Solar: Powering Remote Sites and Facilities
Grid-tied solar systems have the luxury of a fallback — if production dips or a fault occurs, the grid is still there. Off-grid systems don’t have that safety net, which changes the design philosophy from the ground up. Every watt of generation and every unit of battery storage has to be sized to actually cover the site’s real demand, with margin for cloudy days, not just an average.

Battery sizing is the whole game
In a grid-tied system, a slightly undersized battery just means drawing a bit more from the grid. In an off-grid system, an undersized battery means the lights go out — so sizing has to account for realistic worst-case sun conditions across the year, not just typical output, and usually includes a backup generator as a last-resort layer for extended low-sun stretches.
Where off-grid makes sense
Remote telecom towers, agricultural pumping stations, rural clinics, and construction sites far from existing infrastructure are the classic use cases — anywhere that running a grid connection would cost more than a properly sized off-grid solar-and-battery system over its lifetime. As panel and battery costs have fallen, that crossover point keeps moving in off-grid’s favor for an increasing range of remote facilities.
